fascinate me. To create a portrait, I must feel a connection and comprehend what in the expression intrigues me. It may be a sparkle in the eyes or a curved smile, perhaps a smirk or a frown.
Eyes are the focal point and when study the rest of the face, a blends of color reveal nuances and subtleties, textures and variances capturing his or her persona. Of all the genres of fine art, this is the most challenging and rewarding.
The human face is complex; everyone conveys his/her mood depending on a slight tilt of the head or a ray of light may portray a tinted cheek whereas a simple darkened room may reflect a somber temperament. My challenge is to capture the expression by not only replicating what I observe, but also by allowing the viewer to empathize with the subject.
